I think it's very strange that I often have no compunction about getting close to strangers (physically & emotionally), but conversely have immense trouble doing the same with those (supposedly) dear to me.

Actually no; I've just solved the riddle that is every dive bar, in every city, in every country in the world, haven't I? Doesn't mean I have to like it though.
